What is zinc?
Zinc is a mineral the body needs for hundreds of enzymes, immune function, wound healing, taste and smell. The body doesn’t store much of it, so we need a regular supply from food — oysters, red meat, poultry, beans, nuts, whole grains and dairy. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the adult RDA at 11 mg/day for men and 8 mg/day for women.
Why the eye needs zinc
Zinc is highly concentrated in the retina and the tissues beneath it. It helps:
- move vitamin A from the liver to the eye and use it to build rhodopsin, the light-sensing pigment;
- run antioxidant enzymes that protect retinal cells;
- maintain the retinal pigment epithelium, the support layer behind the retina.
That’s why zinc deficiency can contribute to poor night vision.

Check Visivra PricePaid linkWhat the research shows
- AMD: in the original AREDS trial, a formula with 80 mg zinc (plus copper, vitamins C and E and beta-carotene) reduced the risk of advanced AMD by about 25% over five years in high-risk adults. AREDS2 found 25 mg zinc gave similar results, but the NIH calls this preliminary, and the National Eye Institute still recommends the 80 mg formula (NIH ODS).
- Observational studies link higher zinc intake with lower AMD risk.
- Healthy eyes: there is no good evidence that extra zinc improves vision in people who already get enough.
How much zinc is too much?
| Amount | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 8–11 mg/day | Adult RDA (women–men) |
| 40 mg/day | Upper limit for adults from all sources |
| 50 mg/day+ for weeks | Can reduce copper absorption, weaken immunity, lower HDL cholesterol |
| 80 mg/day | AREDS dose — only for high-risk AMD patients, under medical guidance |

Side effects
According to the NIH, too much zinc can cause:
- nausea, vomiting and stomach upset;
- dizziness and headache;
- loss of appetite.
Long-term high intake can lead to copper deficiency, which can cause anaemia and nerve problems. This is why AREDS added 2 mg copper to its high-zinc formula. Visivra does not list copper.
Drug interactions
From the NIH zinc fact sheet:
- Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics — zinc reduces absorption of both. Take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after zinc.
- Penicillamine (used for rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson’s disease) — separate by at least 1 hour.
- Thiazide diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone) — increase zinc loss in urine.
- Iron supplements of 25 mg or more taken at the same time can reduce zinc absorption.
If you take any of these medicines, ask your pharmacist before starting Visivra.
Zinc’s role in Visivra
Zinc supports the vitamin A in the formula and adds a nutrient linked to AMD research. A modest dose (around the RDA) would make sense for general support and keep you well under the upper limit. A high dose without copper would be a concern for long-term use.
Bottom line
Zinc is essential for the eye, and the AREDS research gives it real credibility in people with intermediate AMD. For everyone else, the aim is to get enough — not to take a lot. Check Visivra’s zinc dose against your other supplements and keep the total under 40 mg/day unless your doctor advises otherwise.*

Check Visivra PricePaid linkFrequently asked questions
Why is zinc good for the eyes?
The retina contains high levels of zinc, which helps the eye use vitamin A and supports antioxidant enzymes.
How much zinc is safe per day?
The adult upper limit is 40 mg/day from all sources, according to the NIH.
Can zinc cause side effects?
Yes — nausea, stomach upset and headache are common with too much; long-term high doses can cause copper deficiency.
Does zinc interact with antibiotics?
Yes. Separate quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics from zinc: antibiotic 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after.
