What is vitamin A?
Vitamin A is a group of fat-soluble compounds. Preformed vitamin A (retinol and retinyl esters) comes from animal foods such as liver, fish, eggs and dairy, and from many supplements. Provitamin A carotenoids, mainly beta-carotene, come from orange and green plants such as carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach, and the body converts them to vitamin A as needed. The NIH sets the adult RDA at 900 mcg RAE for men and 700 mcg RAE for women.
How vitamin A supports vision
In the retina’s rod cells, vitamin A combines with a protein to form rhodopsin, the pigment that detects dim light. Each time light hits rhodopsin it changes shape and must be rebuilt with vitamin A. Vitamin A also keeps the cornea and the moist surface of the eye healthy.
According to the NIH, night blindness is the first sign of vitamin A deficiency, and severe, long-term deficiency can lead to xerophthalmia, a serious condition of the eye surface.

Check Visivra PricePaid linkWhat the research shows
- Deficiency: correcting low vitamin A clearly restores night vision and protects the eye surface.
- Well-nourished people: there is no good evidence that extra vitamin A improves vision if you already get enough — which most people in high-income countries do from food.
- AMD: the original AREDS formula included 15 mg beta-carotene. AREDS2 found beta-carotene wasn’t needed, and replacing it with lutein and zeaxanthin gave extra benefit and avoided the lung-cancer concern in smokers (NEI).
How much is too much?
| Amount | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 700–900 mcg RAE/day | Adult RDA (women–men) |
| 3,000 mcg/day | Upper limit for preformed vitamin A (adults) |
| Beta-carotene | No UL, but large supplement doses raised lung-cancer risk in smokers |
The upper limit applies to preformed vitamin A from supplements and animal foods, not to beta-carotene from plants. [Visivra vitamin A form and amount from label]
Pregnancy warning
The NIH notes that preformed vitamin A above the upper limit can cause birth defects, and that experts advise women who are or might be pregnant, and those who are breastfeeding, not to take high doses of vitamin A supplements. Beta-carotene is not known to cause birth defects. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, talk to your doctor before taking Visivra.
Smokers and beta-carotene
Two large trials (CARET and ATBC) found that high-dose beta-carotene supplements increased lung-cancer risk in current and former smokers and asbestos-exposed workers. That is why AREDS2 removed beta-carotene. If you smoke or used to, check whether Visivra’s vitamin A is beta-carotene and discuss it with your doctor.
Drug interactions
From the NIH vitamin A fact sheet:
- Orlistat (weight-loss medicine) reduces absorption of vitamin A and beta-carotene.
- Oral retinoids such as acitretin and bexarotene — taking vitamin A supplements with them raises the risk of vitamin A toxicity. Isotretinoin, used for acne, is also a retinoid and can cause birth defects.
Also count vitamin A in multivitamins, cod liver oil and skin, hair and nails supplements.
Vitamin A’s role in Visivra
Vitamin A supports the retinal chemistry that lets you see in dim light, and zinc in the formula helps the eye use it. A modest amount, well under the upper limit, makes sense; a high preformed dose would be a concern for pregnant women and people already taking other vitamin A sources.
Bottom line
Vitamin A is essential for vision, but most people get enough from food. In Visivra it plays a supporting role. The form and dose matter: check the label, keep preformed vitamin A under 3,000 mcg/day from all sources, and take extra care if you are pregnant, smoke or take retinoid medicines.*

Check Visivra PricePaid linkFrequently asked questions
Why is vitamin A important for eyes?
It builds rhodopsin, the pigment that lets the retina detect dim light, and keeps the eye surface healthy. Night blindness is the first sign of deficiency.
Can too much vitamin A be harmful?
Yes. Preformed vitamin A above 3,000 mcg/day can be toxic and can cause birth defects.
Is beta-carotene safe?
Beta-carotene from food is safe. Large supplement doses raised lung-cancer risk in smokers in major trials.
Can I take vitamin A while pregnant?
Talk to your doctor. Experts advise against high-dose vitamin A supplements during pregnancy.
What form of vitamin A is in Visivra?
The sales page does not say. Check the Supplement Facts label for retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate or beta-carotene.
