| Ingredient | Type | Why it is used in eye formulas | Evidence snapshot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lutein | Carotenoid | Main pigment of the macula; filters blue light | Strong for macular pigment; used in AREDS2 (10 mg) |
| Zeaxanthin | Carotenoid | Partner pigment to lutein in the central macula | Used in AREDS2 (2 mg) alongside lutein |
| Bilberry extract | Berry extract (anthocyanins) | Traditional use for vision and night sight | Weak; best night-vision trials found no benefit |
| Astaxanthin | Carotenoid (algae) | Antioxidant studied for screen-related eye fatigue | Small, mostly industry-funded trials |
| Zinc | Mineral | Needed for vitamin A metabolism in the retina | Part of AREDS formula (80 mg) for intermediate AMD |
| Vitamin A | Vitamin | Builds rhodopsin, the retina’s light-sensing pigment | Essential nutrient; deficiency causes night blindness |

How the ingredients work together
The six ingredients fall into three groups:
- Macular pigments — lutein and zeaxanthin. These collect in the macula and filter blue light. They are the best-studied part of the formula.
- Antioxidants — astaxanthin and bilberry. They target oxidative stress, the wear-and-tear that light and oxygen cause in the retina. Their human evidence is thinner.
- Retinal essentials — vitamin A and zinc. The retina needs vitamin A to sense light, and zinc to use vitamin A. They matter most if you are low.

How Visivra compares with AREDS2
The National Eye Institute’s AREDS2 study is the benchmark for eye supplements.
| Nutrient | AREDS2 formula | Visivra |
|---|---|---|
| Lutein | 10 mg | Listed — dose not published |
| Zeaxanthin | 2 mg | Listed — dose not published |
| Zinc | 80 mg | Listed — dose not published |
| Copper | 2 mg | Not listed |
| Vitamin C | 500 mg | Not listed |
| Vitamin E | 400 IU | Not listed |
| Beta-carotene | Removed | Vitamin A listed (form not stated) |
| Astaxanthin | — | Listed |
| Bilberry | — | Listed |
Visivra shares three AREDS2 nutrients and adds two others. It is not an AREDS2 formula and should not be used in place of one if your eye doctor has recommended AREDS2.

- Lutein — good: raises macular pigment; part of AREDS2.
- Zeaxanthin — good (alongside lutein): part of AREDS2.
- Zinc — good for a specific group: part of the AREDS formula for intermediate AMD.
- Vitamin A — essential: deficiency causes night blindness; extra doesn’t help if you have enough.
- Astaxanthin — some: small, industry-funded trial on screen-related visual acuity.
- Bilberry extract — weak: rigorous night-vision trials found no benefit.
Safety points across the formula
| Ingredient | Main safety point |
|---|---|
| Zinc | Upper limit 40 mg/day; can lower copper; interacts with some antibiotics |
| Vitamin A | Upper limit 3,000 mcg/day preformed; birth-defect risk at high doses; beta-carotene risk in smokers |
| Astaxanthin | EFSA: up to 8 mg/day from supplements safe for adults |
| Bilberry | Extract up to 160 mg/day studied for 6 months; pregnancy safety unknown |
| Lutein / zeaxanthin | Generally well tolerated at studied doses |

What’s missing from the label information
To judge any eye supplement fairly, you need to see:
- the amount of each active ingredient per serving;
- the form of vitamin A (retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate or beta-carotene) and of zinc (oxide, gluconate, citrate…);
- the source of astaxanthin (algae-derived is the most common in supplements) and the standardisation of bilberry (anthocyanin percentage);
- the other ingredients — capsule shell, fillers, allergens.
The sales page gives none of these. If you have a bottle, compare the label with the research doses on each ingredient page.
Our take on the formula
Visivra’s ingredient choice is sensible and focused. Leading with lutein and zeaxanthin puts the best evidence first, and zinc and vitamin A make biological sense. Astaxanthin and bilberry are reasonable additions with weaker proof. The formula’s real test is the doses — which is why we keep asking the seller to publish them.

Check Visivra PricePaid linkFrequently asked questions
What are the main ingredients in Visivra?
Lutein, zeaxanthin, bilberry extract, astaxanthin, zinc and vitamin A.
Are Visivra ingredients natural?
Lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin and bilberry are plant- or algae-derived compounds; zinc and vitamin A are essential nutrients. ‘Natural’ does not automatically mean safe at any dose.
Does Visivra contain the AREDS2 formula?
No. It shares lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc but does not list vitamin C, vitamin E or copper, and its doses are not published.
Is there anything in Visivra I could be allergic to?
Check the ‘other ingredients’ on the label for the capsule material and any fillers. The sales page does not list them.
Which Visivra ingredient is most important?
Lutein, together with zeaxanthin, has the strongest research for supporting the macular pigment.
