Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Visivra if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take any prescription medicine, already take zinc or vitamin A, smoke, have kidney or liver disease, or have a diagnosed eye condition.
| Ingredient | Most likely side effects | Key limit or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc | Nausea, stomach upset, headache, vomiting | UL 40 mg/day; ≥50 mg long-term can cause copper deficiency |
| Vitamin A | Usually none at normal doses | UL 3,000 mcg/day preformed; birth-defect risk at high doses |
| Lutein / zeaxanthin | Generally none reported at studied doses | Studied at 10 mg + 2 mg in AREDS2 |
| Astaxanthin | Generally well tolerated | EFSA: up to 8 mg/day from supplements safe for adults |
| Bilberry extract | Generally well tolerated | Up to 160 mg/day for 6 months studied; leaf unsafe at high doses |
Zinc: the ingredient to watch most closely
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements:
- Too much zinc can cause nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach upset, vomiting and loss of appetite.
- Taking 50 mg or more a day for weeks can interfere with copper absorption, weaken immune function and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol.
- The adult upper limit is 40 mg/day from all sources. (AREDS used 80 mg, but only in high-risk patients under medical supervision.)
Taking zinc with food reduces stomach upset. If you also use zinc lozenges, an immune supplement or a multivitamin, add up the total.
Vitamin A: important, but more is not better
Vitamin A comes in two forms: preformed vitamin A (retinol, retinyl esters) and provitamin A carotenoids such as beta-carotene. The NIH notes:
- The adult upper limit for preformed vitamin A is 3,000 mcg RAE per day.
- High doses of preformed vitamin A can cause birth defects; women who are or might be pregnant should not take high doses.
- In the CARET and ATBC trials, large doses of beta-carotene raised lung-cancer risk in smokers and asbestos-exposed workers.

Check Visivra PricePaid linkAstaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and bilberry
- Astaxanthin: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that intake of up to 8 mg/day from supplements, plus normal diet, is safe for adults.
- Lutein and zeaxanthin: used for years at 10 mg and 2 mg/day in AREDS2 without major safety signals. High intake from any carotenoid can give the skin a harmless yellow tint.
- Bilberry: NCCIH says bilberry fruit is safe in food amounts and extracts up to 160 mg/day for up to six months appeared well tolerated. Bilberry leaves may be unsafe at high doses or long term. Little is known about safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Drug interactions
These interactions come from the NIH fact sheets for zinc and vitamin A:
| Medicine | Interacts with | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics | Zinc | Both absorbed less | Antibiotic 2 h before or 4–6 h after zinc |
| Penicillamine | Zinc | Less penicillamine absorbed | Separate by at least 1 hour |
| Thiazide diuretics | Zinc | More zinc lost in urine | Ask your doctor |
| Iron supplements (25 mg+) | Zinc | Less zinc absorbed | Take at different times |
| Orlistat | Vitamin A, beta-carotene | Less absorbed | Ask your doctor |
| Oral retinoids (acitretin, bexarotene, isotretinoin) | Vitamin A | Risk of vitamin A toxicity | Avoid unless your doctor approves |
For bilberry, NCCIH advises talking to your provider if you take any medicine, because herbs and medicines can interact. Our list is not complete — your pharmacist can check your full medication list.
Who should avoid Visivra or ask first
- Pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding — vitamin A dose matters; bilberry safety unknown.
- Children and teenagers — the product is marketed to adults.
- Smokers and former smokers — check the vitamin A form.
- People on the medicines above.
- People with kidney or liver disease — these organs handle mineral and vitamin A balance.
- Anyone scheduled for surgery — NCCIH advises telling your surgical team about all supplements well in advance.
- People with AMD, glaucoma or diabetic eye disease — follow your eye doctor’s advice on supplements.
When to stop and get help
Stop taking Visivra and contact a healthcare professional if you get:
- persistent nausea, vomiting or stomach pain;
- a rash, swelling, itching or trouble breathing (possible allergy — seek urgent care);
- headache with blurred vision, or bone or joint pain while taking several vitamin-A-containing products.
Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision loss, a curtain over your vision, flashes of light, a shower of new floaters, or a painful red eye. These are not supplement side effects to wait out.
How to report a problem
If you think a supplement harmed you, tell your doctor and consider reporting it to the FDA’s safety reporting system (MedWatch). You can also contact the seller to request a refund within the 60-day window. Keep the bottle and batch number.

What are the side effects of Visivra?
Most people have none. The most likely are mild stomach upset or nausea, usually from zinc, especially on an empty stomach.
Can Visivra cause vitamin A toxicity?
It is possible if you combine it with other vitamin-A-containing supplements or retinoid medicines. Keep total preformed vitamin A under 3,000 mcg/day unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Is Visivra safe for long-term use?
The ingredients have been used long term in studies at specific doses. Because Visivra’s doses are not published, ask your doctor about long-term use, especially regarding zinc and copper balance.
Can Visivra raise blood pressure or heart rate?
None of its listed ingredients is a stimulant. Check the label’s ‘other ingredients’ and talk to your doctor if you have heart concerns.
Is Visivra safe with blood thinners?
We found no specific warning in the government sources we checked, but NCCIH advises talking to your provider before using bilberry with any medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you take anticoagulants.
